The Stingy and the Generous
(A folk tale from Sambas)
Long, long time ago, there lived two brothers. They had completely different characters. The big brother was very stingy and greedy. He never shared his wealth with the poor. The little brother was exactly the opposite. He was generous and kind to poor people. He even had no money left because he had shared it with the poor.
One day the generous brother was sitting in his garden when suddenly a little bird fell on his lap. It was wounded. He took care of it, fed it, and put it in a nice cage. After the bird was healthy, the generous brother let it fly. After some time, the bird returned to him and gave him a watermelon seed.
The generous brother, then, planted the seed and watered it until it grew into a good watermelon plant. Yet, the plant was very strange. It had only one fruit; a big and heavy one. When the watermelon was ripe enough, the generous brother picked it and cut it into two. How surprised he was. The watermelon was full of gold.
The generous brother sold the gold and became very rich. He built a big house and bought very large field. Still, he never forgot to share his wealth with the poor.

Takatuliang, the woodcarver
Long, long time ago on the island of Simbau, in the Sulawesi Sea, there lived a king and his beautiful daughter. The princess was not only beautiful, but she was also wise and kind.
Many princes wanted to marry the king’s daughter and this made the king confused. He, then, announced a contest: whoever presented the princess with the most valuable gift would marry her.
Takatuliang, a poor woodcarver, wanted to join the contest but he was so poor that he had nothing to present. Then, he went far into the forest. There he chose the best tree and carved it into a doll. Next, he took an old piece of cloth and sewed it into a dress for the doll. After that, he cut his own hair and glued it to the doll’s head.
On the day of the contest, all of the princes gathered before the king and the princess. One by one, they presented their gifts: diamond, silk, gold, jewelry. Then, came Takatuliang’s turn.
“What do you have?” asked the princess.
“I bring only a doll,” said Takatuliang softly.
“How many dolls like this do you have?” asked the princess again.
“Only this one. I carved it myself and decorated it with my own hair and my father’s old cloth. He died and this is the only thing he left me.” answered Takatuliang.
The princess was very touched to hear Takatuliang’s story. She decided to marry Takatuliang because he had presented her everything he had. Together, Takatuliang, and the princess lived happily ever after

The Magic Candle
One day, a young wanderer got lost in the wood. Suddenly, he saw a light from an old hut. He knocked on the door, and an old woman opened it. She was crying. She said that a devil had stolen her magic candle. The candle could grant anything she asked. The wanderer asked her where the devil lived. "In a castle not far from here," said the old woman.
The wanderer went to the castle. There he found the devil but he was old and weak. Therefore, when the wanderer grabbed the magic candle from the devil's table and ran away, he couldn't chase him.
However, the wanderer was not a kind man. He didn't return the candle to the old woman, but kept it for himself. He lit the candle and made a wish, "I want to go far from here."
Suddenly, a genie appeared and took him to a beautiful palace. There was a party in the palace. The wanderer wanted to make some money. So, he lit the candle again and wished for some jewelry. He sold them to the guests and was soon making a lot of money. Then, a princess came to buy some jewelry, but there was nothing left. The wanderer fell in love with her, and asked her to marry him. The kind princess said "yes", and they got married the next day.
In his happiness, the wanderer told the princess about his adventure and the magic candle. Hearing that, the princess got very angry. At night, she lit the candle and wished the wanderer disappeared.
In the morning, the wanderer awoke and found himself back in his ugly house in the village.

Mouse and Crocodile
One day, a monkey wanted to cross a river. He saw crocodile in the river, so he asked the crocodile to help him. The crocodile told the monkey to jump onto its back. Then the crocodile swam down the river.
Now, the crocodile was hungry. When the crocodile was in the middle of the river, it stopped and said to the monkey, “Monkey, my father is sick. He must eat the heart of a monkey, then he will be strong again.”
The monkey thought for a while. Then he told the crocodile to swim back to the river bank.
“What for?” asked the crocodile.
“Because I didn’t bring my heart with me,” said the monkey.
“I left it under the tree near some coconuts."
So, the crocodile turned around and swam back to the bank of the river. As soon as they reached the river bank, the monkey jumped off the crocodile’s back and climbed up to the top of a tree.
“Where is your heart?” asked the crocodile.
“You are foolish,” the monkey said to the crocodile.
“Mow. I am free and you have nothing."

The man didn't have any money and so he couldn't pay his taxes. "If you don't pay immediately, I'll kill you," said the king. "I can't pay," said the poor man, "because I haven't got any money." "Then you must die!" said the king. "GO"
The man fell to the floor." "Please let me go, Your Majesty," he said. "If you don't kill me, I'll teach your horse to talk." The king had a wonderful white horse, and he was very proud of it. He smiled. "All right, he said, you can have one year. If you teach the horse to talk, I'll give you gold and silver. But if you don't, I'll kill you. "GO"
Two soldiers took the man to the horse's stable. "You're stupid," said one of the two soldiers. "You can't teach a horse to talk. It's impossible. At the end of the year, the king will kill you." "Ah," said the man, "I'm not stupid. Before the end of the year four things might happen. The king might die. I might die. The horse might die ... or ... the horse might talk!"

Kyai Jegod
Once upon a time, there was a king who ruled Mataram Kingdom. His name was Amangkurat IV. He was the grandfather of Sultan. He often meditated in a nearby forest, called Garjitawati.
One day, when a gardener was gathering grass for his cattle in the forest, he looked for some water because it was so hot. He found a small pond and when he was going to drink some water from it, a dragon came out of the under-water, but it was so friendly to him. The dragon said that if Sultan wanted to build his palace, it was supposed to be located in that forest. Then it disappeared.
The Sultan started to build the palace in that forest. He demanded strong and old woods and the forest where those woods lied was said to be home of genies and spirits. His lumberjacks could not find anything to eat and the only thing they could have were some rice and water for three days, or sometimes they could not have anything.
The Sultan ordered that the main pole in the palace's hall had to be built from special wood, which would give strong impression. One night, a servant who was sleeping in the forest heard loud and deep voice. The voice introduced itself as Kyai Jegod. The servant saw Kyai Jegod was an old, tall, and massive tree. He said that he would voluntarily let himself be cut to make the main pole so that he could stay inside it forever.
The servant told it to Sultan and Sultan let Kyai Jegod stay inside it forever, while Kyai Jegod became the protector of that palace since then.
